![]() ![]() ![]() The song is about sex and power, and takes as its starting point King David’s sexual infatuation with the beautiful Bathsheba (“You saw her bathing on the roof / Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew ya.”). But I know you won’t, so let’s get into it. I’m glad you asked, although part of me just wants to tell to go look up the fucking lyrics for yourself. ![]() “If you’re so smart, why don’t you tell us what you think the song is about?” ![]() The problem is that people hear the lovely melody, and the word “Hallelujah” repeated throughout, but they don’t listen to the rest of the lyrics, and don’t know what the damn song is about… and they’re playing it at weddings, at funerals, and at the Republican National Convention. The song itself, again, despite its title, is not about God or Jesus or Heaven. However, Leonard Cohen’s use of the phrase in the song is ironic. Hallelujah does indeed mean “praise God” in Hebrew. Which is why I hate it when people have it played at weddings and funerals. You might think that makes sense because of how big a role religion plays in America in general, and in the Republican Party in particular… except that Hallelujah, despite its title, is emphatically not a religious song. It has been brought to my attention that Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah was either sung or played at the Republican National Convention today. ![]()
